Which unintelligent decision should we make next?

Mountains, Horse Trailers and Cliffs…Oh My!

Someday we will stop doing stupid things, but yesterday was not that day.

After eating brunch with some sisters, we decided that it would be a grand idea to go on an adventure.  It was a gorgeous day, it had finally stopped snowing for long enough to not hate Harrisonburg and it was sunny and warm.  So, we drove to the barn, threw the horses on the trailer (after chasing Dusty around the field for about forever) and started on our merry way.  All was well and Lauren's direction skills were on point (so she says) until we reached George Washington National Forest, where the turn wasn't marked and we completely missed it. We also missed the sign that said continuing on this road would bring us to Reddish Knob, a.k.a the highest point in Virginia. #struggling

As we continued up this incline with a fully loaded horse trailer and (luckily) a full tank of gas, we slowly but surely came to the realization that we would have to turn around, a prospect hindered greatly by the one lane road with no shoulder and an unguarded cliff to our left. Although she has every faith in Annie's trailer driving skills, Lauren was a bit daunted by this entire experience, and was starting to freak out a little bit as we came to a spot in the road with a space where we could do an 800 point turn. Her nerves were not helped by the fact that at about point 3 of 800, the truck shut off. You read that correctly: the truck just randomly shut itself off. Please note that at this point we were blocking the whole road and the whole 10 feet of the turnaround spot. Oops!

Lauren was a little more than freaking out at that point, but Annie was able to simply turn the truck back on (right away, no weird sounds or smells, very odd) and proceed with the other 797 turns she needed to complete to turn the truck and trailer around without falling off the cliff. Many saints were invoked, the Blessed Mother was called upon, and our guardian angels were working overtime, but we made it down the mountain all in one piece! Hooray!

After getting down the mountain, we saw the MASSIVE sign (that we had missed on the way up) directing us to Hone Quarry and proceeded to get a nice massage from all of the potholes on the road.  The rest of the trip was fairly uneventful, however we did figure out why the rooster crossed the road…
